"Cape Split" by Catherine Geiling— Our June 2020 Gold Medal Winner

Catherine Geiling is our first place winner from the contest posted in our June, 2020 issue!

What the judges had to say:

This tale was sorrowful and melancholy yet somehow glimmered with a sense of hope through longing, and the awakening of truth. It was crafted beautifully, lending the reader confidence that the author is a natural-born crafts-person.
I loved the maturity of this story and the contradictions and truths that it doesn’t flinch from. At the beginning I was concerned that the story was going to dissolve into gushy romance but the epiphany brings all that to halt with sad but honest finality. A very smart, well-written story.

Meet CATHERINE

Catherine Geiling has recently rediscovered her love of writing, after a lengthy hiatus to deal with life's realities, some more real than others'. She has a stellar example of humanity, a beloved grown son. She lives in Quebec, just north of the Ontario border, with her husband and two Labrador retrievers, all of whom strive to keep her sane.

They are both romantics, idealists. One embracing the sure history of service to the greater good, one floating untethered to any past.

This is new territory for them. For six months they have been dating, typically dinner or the pub followed by sensual discovery. Today, they are out in the world in daylight, hiking Cape Split…
