Six Make the Shortlist for our December Writing Contest

We are so pleased to announce that SIX writers have made the shortlist for our December Write Prompt Challenge.

We try to choose images that can take authors in countless directions, and the image a person standing in the rain certainly took people to some interesting places. These writers approached the provided image with wonderfully unique views that were clever, surprising, and touching.

Congratulations to Veronique Aglat, Ann Fischer, Desiree Kendrick, Eric Lee, Ashvaria Rai, and Cheryl Skory Suma — we wish you well as you go on to the final stage of judging!

Véronique Aglat | shortlisted for the story, 'The Last Blind Date'

Véronique Aglat lives in Montreal, Quebec, with her husband and one surviving son. She has published short stories in Canada, the United States, England, and Australia. Typically, she finds inspiration in natures but has lately become interested in philosophy. She is working on a novel.

Ann Fischer| shortlisted for the story, 'Rain, A Quiet Street, and Amber'

Ann Fischer is a writer and a photographer living in an Artscape community on the waterfront in Toronto. In each medium she focuses on words and images that are understated, unveiled and often very tender. Her stories have been included in several anthologies and published in various literary magazines, both in print and on-line. Her photographs have been published in literary magazines as well  and exhibited in various Ontario galleries. She is having a solo show at the Bayside Gallery in Toronto in April.

Desiree Kendrick | shortlisted for the story, 'The Unbearable Weight of Love'

Desiree’s writing has been published in literary magazines in Canada, the US, and the UK. A list of her publication credits can be found on her website at www.desireekendrick.com/published-work. She loves to travel (except in a pandemic). She always jots in her travel journal, where you will find more than one humourous tale recorded in old-fashioned ink.

Eric Lee | shortlisted for the story, 'We Have Created a List of Things for Paul to Do and There is No Paul'

Eric Lee is a writer whose work has appeared in F(r)iction Magazine, Flash Fiction Magazine, and Ten Stories Down. He is learning to slow down enough to watch the clouds go by. He loves and is inspired by his awesome family.

Ashvaria Rai | shortlisted for the story, 'I Wonder'

Hi! My name is Ashvaria Rai (no, not the famous one, sadly), and I’m a literature and media nerd who uses writing to deconstruct my existence and better understand the world around me. Having worked as a freelance writer for sites like Screen Rant, I am expanding my horizons in 2023 by shifting focus to experimental writing forms in podcasting, short fiction, and music. Blank Spaces was one of my first online publications ever, and it’s always a blast coming back to the flash fiction contest to explore different themes and create new stories!

Cheryl Skory Suma | shortlisted for the story, 'Healing the Heart without Opening the Chest'

Cheryl’s fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry have appeared in US, UK, and Canadian publications, including Barren Magazine, Reckon Review, Exposition Review, Fatal Flaw Literary Magazine, Longridge Review, SFWP, and many others. Her work placed in thirty-two competitions across 2019-22, including: shortlist, Five South’s 2021 Short Fiction Prize, shortlist, Blank Spaces 2021 Fiction Anthology Contest, Runner-Up, 2022 Pulp Literature’s Flash Fiction Contest, Honorable Mention, Exposition Review’s 2022 Flash405 Contest, shortlist, Solstice Magazine’s 2022 Literary Contest, and shortlist, 2022 International Amy MacRae Award for Memoir. Cheryl has a MHSc Speech-Language Pathology and an HBSc Psychology. She recently joined the team at Reckon Review as a staff reader. You can find her on twitter @cherylskorysuma

Watch for our announcement of the top three in the coming weeks!
