Six Make the Shortlist for our December Writing Contest

We are so pleased to announce that SIX writers have made the shortlist for our December 2021 Write Prompt Challenge.

We try to choose images that can take authors in countless directions, and the image of a mermaid clutching a shoe took people on some interesting adventures. These writers approached the provided image with wonderfully unique views that were clever and surprising.

Congratulations to Annette Althouse, Monica Bernard, Jenna Greene, Julie Meier, Dustin Ruth, and Andrew Shaughnessy— we wish you well as you go on to the final stage of judging!

Annette Althouse | shortlisted for the story, 'Tails of the Sea'

Much of Annette’s writing is inspired by the eight years she lived in Kugaaruk (formerly Pelly Bay) in Canada’s high Arctic. She worked as a reporter for News/North in Yellowknife and, after moving to the coastal community, freelanced pieces about the Inuit for in-flight magazines.

Monica Bernard | shortlisted for the story, 'The Night Walk'

Working globally in project management yet rooted in the Prairies, Monica has called Gimli Manitoba home base for the past fifteen years. Gardener, cook, pilot, adventurer, motor-cycler, reader, traveller, Monica likes to discover new books in many genres, engage in lively conversation, and explore the outdoors.

Jenna Greene | shortlisted for the story, 'Into the Depths'

Jenna is an author from Alberta, known for her Reborn Marks series. She teaches elementary school and enjoys a good nap.

Julie Meier | shortlisted for the story, 'Below the Deep'

Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Calgary. Her writing has been published internationally in several anthologies and on-line journals. Her flash fiction “These Walls” was shortlisted for the 2020 Edinburgh International Flash Fiction Award, and her story “The Direction of Home” was shortlisted for Blank Spaces 2021 Fiction Anthology Contest.

Dustin Ruth | shortlisted for the story, 'For You, Anything'

Dustin is a former journalist now living in B.C. He always wanted to be a writer and has decided to give this whole writing thing another go.

Andrew Shaughnessy | shortlisted for the story, 'Time Won’t Wait'

Andrew (Andy) is an intellectual property litigation lawyer from Toronto, Ontario who, in his spare time, pursues his love of setting short stories to prompts in contest settings.
